Graduate Diploma in Education
UTS have introduced a new graduate entry secondary education degree - the Bachelor of Teaching in Secondary Education. Students with an undergraduate degree with the required content subjects receive recognition of prior learning (RPL) enabling completion of the degree in 1 year of accelerated mode of study. The course is offered in a range of 10 teaching specialisations.
The course prepares graduates for teaching in secondary schools and provides them with the opportunity to build on strengths developed in their undergraduate degree. Students must ensure that they qualify for two single methods or one double method. Eligibility for a single method usually requires two years of study in the discipline and for a double method three years of study in the discipline. Students complete 10 core units as well as a minimum of 45 days of satisfactory field placements in a variety of educational settings.
The Graduate Diploma in Education is a one-year full-time course for graduates that qualifies them for registration and employment as secondary school teachers. The course provides studies in curriculum, education policy, information technology, language and literacy, and two learning area studies. Students also undertake supervised teaching practice during school placements. All academic subjects are taught in conjunction with subjects in the Bachelor of Teaching degree.
It consists of 120 points, including at least 60 points above Level 2, or 120 points at Level 7, from those listed for the relevant programme. The GradDipEd is equivalent to one year full-time study but may be completed part-time. While some students make eclectic choices, others select in specialised areas, such as adult education, the sociology of education, or developmental psychology, to enhance their knowledge and qualifications in particular areas. Many use this programme as a bridge to postgraduate study in education.
